1. How Buildings Learn - Stewart Brand - 1 of 6 - “Flowâ€
BBC
30 min - Jul 30, 2008

This six-part, three-hour, BBC TV series aired in 1997. I presented and co-wrote the series; it was directed by James Muncie, with music by Brian Eno. The series was based on my 1994 book, HOW BUILDINGS LEARN: What Happens After They’re Built. The book is still selling well and is used as a text in some college courses. Most of the 27 reviews on Amazon treat it as a book about system and software design, which tells me that architects are not as alert as computer people. But I knew that; that’s part of why I wrote the book. Anybody is welcome to use anything from this series in any way they like. Please don’t bug me with requests for permission. Hack away. Do credit the BBC, who put considerable time and talent into the project. Historic note: this was one of the first television productions made entirely in digital--- shot digital, edited digital. The project wound up with not enough money, so digital was the workaround. The camera was so small that we seldom had to ask permission to shoot; everybody thought we were tourists. No film or sound crew. Everything technical on site was done by editors, writers, directors. That’s why the sound is a little sketchy, but there’s also some direct perception in the filming that is unusual.

Moon And Mars Buildings

Moon And Mars Buildings

7 min - Apr 17, 2007

In 1969 the astronaughts found alien structures on the Moon and the rusians found evidence on Mars some years later! Colonel Ed Black writes, There was an extensive initial meeting in Cuba between The Delta and The Project Utopia Committee, Codename Crown, in the early Spring of 1943. A measured amount of scientific technology was provided by The Delta in return for a solemn agreement that The Delta would remain UNKNOWN BY THE GENERAL POPULATION, that they had exclusive rights to OUR Moon and would not be interfered with at any time in the future and that Army Project Echo, that bounced radio signals off OUR Moon, would be canceled. Among the technology that was provided by the Delta was transistor technology and aerodynamic technology that eventually led to jet propulsion. Well for years the scientific community would have us believe that OUR Moon is incapable of holding an atmosphere because it is too small, it does not have the gravitational ability to hold on to an atmosphere but the fact is that it does have the ability to sustain an atmosphere of at least 2 to 3 miles above it's surface and no doubt has at some point in it's history as it's topographical features would indicate. Delta are also involved with Mars and it's Moons and SATURN'S MOON TITAN. Our relations with the Delta went wrong with the death of Roosevelt and the changes that occurred under Truman and later Eisenhower. We actually double-crossed the Delta and how they turned against us, but only in a limited way. In the Kennedy years for the first time ever we began to play hard ball with the Delta, we defied them and challenged them and I think that this is all vital in order to understand where we are today. Thanks to Ed Black E-mail above dated Feb 15th 2006

How Did They Build That - Tall Buildings

30 min - May 9, 2008

In the third episode of this series on man-made structures, we take a look at Europe's tallest buildings, past and present. First up, we travel to San Gimignano, a small medieval hill town in Tuscany. Here, we take a look at the imposing towers that have become the town's international symbol. Next, we visit Liverpool's Royal Liver Building. At 322 feet, this structure was Britain's first true skyscraper and was revolutionary when it opened in 1911. Finally we visit Commerzbank in Frankfurt, Germany. Standing at almost 299 metres tall, this building is currently the tallest building in Europe. How Did They Build That? is a series that explores how new materials and construction techniques have allowed engineers, builders and architects to build some of the greatest man-made structures of all time.
